Bengalese Breed Standard

General: The ideal Bengalese is a medium to large sized, well muscled cat, not quite cobby, but definitely not svelt.  Males may be considerably larger than females.  This breed’s coat color and eye color are it’s most distinct features and should be preserved above all else.

Head:  Well rounded in appearance, though not appearing dome shaped in the forehead.  Full face with a short muzzle, which maintains the rounded contours of the  head.  Rounded chin with proper bite.

Ears:  Average in size, wide at the base, tapering to slightly rounded tips, with or without ear tufts.

Eyes:  Almond in shape, proportionate in size to face.  Blue in color, deeper shades preferred.

Body:  Medium to large in size. Well muscled with moderate bone structure.

Neck:  Well muscled, medium in length.  Neither short and cobby, nor long and snaky.

Legs: Of moderate bone, with front and rear legs proportionate to each other and body.

Paws:  Fairly round in shape, not too heavy, nor too dainty.  Toes: 5 in front, 4 behind.

Tail:  Medium thickness, average in length.

Coat:  Medium length, may stand up slightly, giving a fluffy appearance.  Ear tufts acceptable, but not required.

Condition:  Excellent physical condition, well muscled.  Neither fat nor bony.

Color: Bengalese come in two color varieties, the Lynx Point and the Snow Calico
The Lynx Point variety has a cream to beige or light gray base coat on the body, with darker tan or gray shading evident in some cats.  Lynx Points must have clearly defined tabby markings on all points: mask, legs, feet, & tail, though ears may be solid, as long as the color matches other points and not the body color.  Agouti patterning on hairs is acceptable.
The Snow Calico variety has a white base coat on the body, with patches of color that match that described in the Lynx Point coat.  Body patches may not be present in some cases, but all Snow Calicos must have at least partial points, showing the tabby pattern.  Snow Calicos may have light shades of orange evident in their coat as well.
Faint spotting or striping may be evident in the body color of either variety, but only of a darker shade of the beige/cream or gray base coat.  Points may be any color as long as they show the distinct tabby markings and are darker than the body color.  All kittens of either variety are usually born white or mostly white.  Markings appear and darken with age.

Penalties:  Long and lanky or fine boned structure.  A wedge shaped head.  Colors other than mentioned in the standard.

Disqualifications:  Any eye color other than blue.  Incorrect # of toes.  Any evidence of poor health.

Personality:   A very active, curious breed.  Love to play and learn.  They act much more dog like, and some even like to play in water.  They love to follow their owners and are easily trained, though will get their feelings hurt easily and may become aloof if they are upset with you.  Not typically lap cats, though they may have cuddly moments.
